It’s just a twist made out of two strands of hair. If you’re unsure of what a rope braid is, then you are in for a treat.

The rope braid is one style that isn’t used as much as most other styles. It’s a style that will give you a fresh perspective and make you feel like a true renaissance girl. They are a bold style that can make you feel like you’re from another era. Braided styles are becoming more and more popular by the day.
Rope braid how to#
Thank you so much for your directions on how to do the rope braid! I actually got one done using your directions and it stayed for several hours. If you are looking for an awesome new style this season, then you can’t go wrong with a rope braid. I am also glad I am not the only person who is having issues with rope braids and that others are finding this thread useful as well.ĮDIT: I totally love Torrin's hair tutorial videos! They are so wonderful! Now I am waiting for hairtoys from Santa (AKA: the people I told that I wanted some hairtoys, ha ha.) I'll keep practicing, though (because my first real rope braid is far from perfect), and I am very excited about trying the French rope next. Now I am wearing my rope braid and it hasn't loosened at all since I put it in other than my shortest layers escaping from the top (I had the same layer issues with this with normal braids for a while, so I'll just have to wait for them to grow out even more). So I twisted a little at a time and wrapped the strands around each other as I went. I learned that my hair just won't stay if I twist all or most of the strands at once, even if I twist and braid correctly. And after some modification, I FINALLY got it! Yay! :) I also want to try that but she demonstrated, but I'll have to wait until after Christmas to do that since I don't own any hiarsticks or barrettes (lost them when I moved out of my grandparents' house). Watching her do it, and her explanation helped me to finally make sense of the rope braid. The BEST rope braiding tutorial is by torrinpage. :Dīigmama, and everyone, i'm also a lefty, above works fine for me.

You're not actually changing direction, you're just fooling your brain. It's not in your back anymore, that's why. If you need to take your hair over your shoulder to go as far as you can, your brain needs to change direction - twist your hair counterclockwise then. Continue that way until you can't go further and tie. When both strands are twisted, put the right one OVER the left one, then twist some more, same way as before, and put the now right one, before left one, over the now left one, before right one. I can do it at the same time now, but when I started I did one after the other. I hold that strand with my right hand, and start twisting the left one in the same direction - that's the tricky part. I start with the right one, put it between my thumb and my index finger and twist it clockwise, a few times, not the whole thing. I put my hair in a ponytail, divide in 2 strands (can't manage more, yet). Just concentrate really hard, twist in one direction and make sure your doing both strands that way. I was a bit surprised when I did it without being in front of a mirror. The left always twisted counterclockwise while the right was doing clockwise - and that doesn't work at all. I found it very difficult to coordinate my hands to twist in the same direction. I didn't understand rope braiding first either. Has anyone else had this problem? Was it this awkward when you first learned to rope braid? Can someone explain why my hair just won't stay?

I feel so silly and like I'm missing something. I think my problem either lies in my layers, or in that I'm doing something wrong with the tops of my braids. My BF says it's because I have such silky soft hair, but I totally disagree with him because I've seen lots of fine-hairs on here wearing some pretty awesome rope braid styles. I've tried both the two strand and three strand rope braids and I encountered the same problem with both of them: They want to unravel at the top of the braid near my scalp, and then go on down towards the elastic until all I have is a weird, twisted hair mess! I have also tried putting an elastic at the top of the braid. I've found a few tutorials online and have followed their instructions, but my rope braids never want to stay! I am so frustrated because I would really like to learn this style. I love the appearance of rope braids, but I just can't seem to get them to stay in my hair.
